La versión 8 de MSN Messenger integra novedades entre las que se cuenta el nuevo nombre Windows Live Messenger que sigue la línea de cambios del nuevo sistema operativo de Microsoft Windows Vista.

Como en versiones anteriores Microsoft ofrece un nuevo aspecto, una nueva opción que permitirá personalizar el color de la ventana de contactos, la posibilidad de entablar conversaciones de texto en estado sin conexión con usuarios que se encuentren en línea, disfrutar de un buzón de mensajes, una nueva opción de compartir ficheros y la inclusión de la posibilidad de realizar llamadas a teléfonos fijos y móviles a bajo precio.
