Major winter storm slams US mid-Atlantic states
Federal offices and public schools in Washington, D.C., were closed as the first major winter storm of the new year swept across the US Mid-Atlantic. The National Weather Service said more than five inches of snow had already fallen in the nation's capital by midday.
