(Quizá del lat. *cavella, der. de cavus, hueco entre las manos; cf. it. covone).

1. f. Conjunto de sarmientos, cañas, mieses, ramas, hierba, etc., mayor que el manojo y menor que el haz. Ochenta gavillas de sarmientos, de cebada.

2. f. Junta de muchas personas y comúnmente de baja calidad. Gavilla de pícaros. Gente de gavilla.
