Who We Are – The Story of Excelsio Media

Excelsio Media
Excelsio Media was born from a journalistic vision rooted in independence, curiosity, and the pursuit of clarity. Founded in 2005 by Colombian journalist Nelson Alarcón (known online as alarconnelson), the project began as a digital news site serving the city of Sogamoso and the wider Province of Sugamuxi in the Andean region of Boyacá.

From the start, Excelsio aimed to be more than a local news portal. Its name, derived from the Latin “excelsus” — meaning “highest” or “supreme” — reflected a commitment to elevate public discourse and provide information with context, accuracy, and respect for the reader’s intelligence.

From Local Roots to a Global Outlook

During its early years, Excelsio established itself as one of the pioneering online media projects in Boyacá. Long before the rise of social networks, the publication offered timely reporting and commentary on civic issues, culture, and education. In 2008, Excelsio evolved into a fully virtual newspaper, expanding its audience and experimenting with multimedia formats that were ahead of their time in regional journalism.

Over the years, Excelsio’s editorial voice matured alongside the digital transformation of global media. After a brief pause in 2017, the platform was relaunched in 2020 as Excelsio Media, embracing a broader, more international mission. The new Excelsio began publishing in English and Spanish, focusing on stories and data that connect the local with the global — from culture and society to technology and global trends.

An Independent Digital Platform

Excelsio Media operates independently, without ties to political or corporate interests. Its guiding principle remains simple yet rare: to inform with integrity. Through data-driven analysis, original reporting, and accessible storytelling, the publication seeks to shed light on the facts that shape today’s complex world.

The platform is structured around three editorial pillars:

  • News & Analysis – covering global and regional developments with factual depth and transparency.
  • Data & Trends – highlighting underreported statistics and patterns that reveal how the world is changing.
  • Culture & Language – exploring communication, identity, and the cultural forces that shape modern life.

A New Generation of Journalism

Two decades after its founding, Excelsio Media continues to evolve. What began as a local experiment in digital journalism has become a global space for reflection — where data meets narrative, and information meets purpose.

Today, Excelsio Media stands as a bridge between Latin America and the world, driven by a commitment to independence, quality, and meaning in every story told.
